Young People with SEND: Breaking the Chains of a Broken System

Empowering Change Through Genuine Futures CIC
In a world where children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) should be nurtured and supported, the current system often fails them. Rather than providing the assistance these young individuals and their families desperately need, the existing infrastructure exacerbates their struggles. The public spending watchdog has highlighted this stark reality, pointing out that despite a 58% increase in funding over the past decade, totaling £10.7 billion, the system remains financially “unsustainable” and urgently needs reform.
England is home to an estimated 1.7 million children with special educational needs. Yet, many of these children are “written off” before they’ve had a fair chance to thrive. This negative labeling can have profound effects, leading to a cycle of low self-esteem and engagement in disruptive or antisocial behaviors. Research suggests that once labeled, children are more likely to face suspensions or expulsions, even for minor infractions, as they are perceived as delinquent.
The personal journey of Sam Smith, founder of Genuine Futures CIC, sheds light on these systemic failures. Growing up in Bolton, Sam experienced the harsh reality of being “written off” at just five years old. This early dismissal marked his educational journey and offered him a unique perspective on the issues within the system. Today, Sam is dedicated to changing the narrative for children with SEND through entrepreneurship education.
Genuine Futures CIC is committed to addressing the gaps in the current system. By offering innovative entrepreneurship programs, they aim to empower young people with SEND, providing them with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed. This approach not only helps prevent unnecessary involvement in the youth justice system but also fosters a sense of purpose and empowerment.
