Success Story: From Disengagement to Determination – Alex’s Journey with Genuine Futures
Posted on:
Background
Alex, a young person facing significant challenges in mainstream education, was at risk of disengaging completely from school. Concerns were raised by his parents, children’s services, and school staff that he may not even sit his final exams. His outlook on the future was uncertain, and his confidence was low.
During a Young Person Planning Workshop, a Child Protection Coordinator recommended a referral to Genuine Futures—a programme designed to support young people who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). That referral would mark a turning point in Alex’s journey.
Intervention
From the moment Alex joined Genuine Futures, he found himself welcomed into a space where he felt safe, seen, and supported. Through engaging workshops, mentoring, and hands-on activities, Alex began to develop a stronger sense of purpose.
One of the most memorable experiences for both Alex and the team was his involvement in a pop-up car cleaning business. Started from the boot of a car with no customers and a handful of leaflets, the project showed Alex the power of taking initiative. After knocking on doors and landing their first few clients, Alex turned to the team and said:
“Wow—all that’s come from the boot of that car? It’s true—you can start a business from nothing.”
That moment of realisation shifted Alex’s mindset. He saw the possibility of building something from scratch—and, more importantly, believed that he could be the one to do it.
Impact
Over just two months, Alex’s transformation was clear. He:
- Developed a more positive and proactive outlook on his future
- Built new friendships and felt a strong sense of belonging
- Engaged actively with staff, mentors, and guest speakers
- Participated in confidence-building activities, including an outdoor expedition with Adventure One
- Registered with two local colleges and is now awaiting placement depending on his exam results
Colin Cooper, a key professional in Alex’s support network, shared:
“Your service has given Alex memories such as the popup car wash and Adventure One. He feels part of something positive and welcome. As a result of engaging with you, Alex has now registered with two local colleges… Once again thank you for being part of the team around Alex.”
