Success Story Case Study: Cayden’s Journey – From Lost to Leading His Future

Posted on: 27th June 2025 | 3 min

Background

At the start of 2025, Cayden, aged 17, had made the difficult decision to leave college. Having realised that a course in physical education wasn’t the right fit, he found himself unsure of what to do next. He was interested in construction but didn’t know how to access the right opportunities. Like many young people, Cayden assumed a job would eventually find its way to him—until the harsh reality set in that effort, structure, and support are essential to move forward.

By March, Cayden had slipped into a routine of isolation. With no job, no education, and no clear plan, his confidence declined and his mental health began to suffer. He was stuck at home, feeling hopeless and unmotivated.

The Turning Point

Everything changed when Cayden’s mum introduced him to the Genuine Futures programme—a decision that would reshape his life.

Through the programme, Cayden met Sam Smith and Mike Alleyne, leaders of the initiative who Cayden now describes as “role models who genuinely want to make a change.” At first, he was hesitant. Being in a room full of strangers was uncomfortable, and he didn’t fully engage. But over time, the supportive environment began to break down those barriers.

Team-building activities—such as archery and outdoor challenges—helped Cayden connect with others. The group grew close quickly, and he began to feel a sense of belonging and motivation he hadn’t experienced in months.

Facing the Challenge

As April arrived, Cayden began applying for jobs. Despite his best efforts, he was met with silence. Repeated rejections took a toll. With no income, he couldn’t contribute to his grandmother’s rent, which added pressure and led to misunderstandings at home. “It really altered my mental health and left me in a depressed state,” he shared.

But on a Thursday—the day the Genuine Futures team would typically meet—Cayden received a life-changing call: Cunard Construction was offering him a chance.

The Outcome

That phone call marked a new chapter in Cayden’s life. He describes it as the moment his mindset shifted. “I started smiling again. It really brought my old self back.”

By June, Cayden was waking up at 6am every day and going to work with renewed purpose. He now understands the value of perseverance and personal growth.

“From experience, I’ve learned that you need grit, determination, and most of all—resilience.”

Why It Matters

Cayden’s story is not just about employment—it’s about transformation. With the right support, space to grow, and people who believe in you, change is possible. Genuine Futures provided the structure, encouragement, and practical opportunities that Cayden needed to rebuild his confidence and carve out a meaningful path.
