From Hesitant to Empowered: Paula’s Journey with Boss Your Future Bolton

Posted on: 21st July 2025 | 2 min

At Genuine Futures, we believe every young person has potential — sometimes, they just need the right environment to see it for themselves.

Paula, a young participant in our Boss Your Future Bolton programme, is a shining example of what happens when someone is given a chance to step outside their comfort zone and into opportunity.

We caught up with Paula at the recent Big Charity Pop Car Wash in Bolton, where she joined other young people for a day of teamwork, hands-on learning, and giving back to the community. It wasn’t just about scrubbing cars — it was about discovering confidence, connecting with others, and trying something new.

“I’ve Never Done That Before”

For Paula, this was her first time learning how to clean a car — a task that may seem simple but was a big personal step.

“I’m really enjoying it so far,” she told us. “I feel like I’ve engaged a bit more than I usually would. I’ve learned how to clean cars — I’ve never done that before! And I feel like teamwork… we just worked together. It’s built my confidence.”

These may seem like small milestones to some, but for Paula and many of the young people we support, they represent progress, growth, and pride.

Creating Space for Social Growth

One of the most powerful aspects of the Boss Your Future programme is how it brings young people together in a safe, structured, and encouraging environment. For Paula, who admitted she often finds it hard to engage, the event was a turning point.

Being part of the car wash team helped her open up, socialise more naturally, and feel like she was part of something meaningful. That sense of belonging is at the heart of everything we do.

What is Boss Your Future?

Boss Your Future Bolton is a youth development programme supporting 15–24-year-olds who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). We offer real-world learning opportunities, practical skills development, personal mentoring, and access to positive networks — all designed to empower young people to take control of their future.

Whether it’s through car washing, creative projects, digital skills, outdoor experiences, or community work, every session is built around three goals: confidence, connection, and capability.

Why It Matters

Paula’s story may sound simple, but it echoes a much deeper issue — too many young people are left behind by systems that don’t see their value. With the right support, encouragement, and hands-on opportunities, those same young people can thrive.

At Genuine Futures, we don’t just believe in second chances — we believe in first real chances for young people who’ve never truly had one.
