Bolton Wanderers in the Community: Backing Bolton’s Young People Through We Shine Any Car
Posted on:
What if something as simple as getting a car cleaned could help a young person take a meaningful step towards employment, confidence and a brighter future?
That is the idea behind We Shine Any Car, a youth-led car cleaning and social enterprise initiative created by young people involved in the Boss Your Future Bolton Programme. Supported by Genuine Futures and the experienced team behind The Scrappers, the initiative gives young people the opportunity to learn through real work, take responsibility and see the value of their contribution.
Now, with the backing of Bolton Wanderers in the Community, the campaign is bringing together football, enterprise and local pride to support Bolton’s young people. It is a practical example of what can happen when organisations across the town unite around a shared belief: young people deserve opportunities to show what they can do.
The message is simple: every car washed can create an opportunity, and every donation can help build a future.
Bolton Wanderers backing Bolton’s young people
Bolton Wanderers has always represented more than what happens on the pitch. The club has a powerful place in the identity of the town, while Bolton Wanderers in the Community uses that connection to reach people, strengthen neighbourhoods and help local residents thrive.
Its support for We Shine Any Car adds a familiar and trusted voice to a campaign built around employment, mentoring and opportunity. For the young people involved, being recognised by an organisation at the heart of Bolton can also reinforce an important message: their ideas matter, their effort is valued and their future is worth backing.
The campaign’s presence at Bolton Wanderers provides a strong visual symbol of the partnership. Young people are standing together, representing their work and inviting the wider community to take part. As they learn to clean a car safely and professionally, they also practise punctuality, communication, teamwork and problem-solving: everyday habits that can become the foundations of a lasting career.
What is We Shine Any Car?
We Shine Any Car is a practical youth enterprise designed to help young people earn, learn and build confidence through real work. It is particularly focused on young people who may be not in education, employment or training, often described as NEET, as well as those who have faced marginalisation or barriers to opportunity.
The initiative was created by young people rather than simply designed for them. That distinction is central to its purpose. Participants are given ownership, responsibility and a genuine role in shaping the enterprise.
Through car cleaning, they can develop skills in customer service, teamwork, communication, time management, health and safety, money management and business development. They also experience the satisfaction of completing visible work: a customer arrives with a car that needs attention and leaves with a result the team can be proud of.
Supported by Genuine Futures and the award-winning team behind The Scrappers, We Shine Any Car combines practical training with mentoring and wraparound support. The aim is to help young people move towards sustainable careers, further training or even the creation of their own businesses.
From Bolton FM to the wider Bolton community
Mike, Paula, Luis and Cameron recently joined John Beesley on Bolton FM’s This Is Bolton to talk about the campaign and the difference it can make.
Sharing the story on local radio gave the team an opportunity to reach people across the borough in a direct and personal way. It also placed young people and their ambitions at the centre of a positive local conversation.
Too often, discussions about young people focus only on statistics, risks or problems. We Shine Any Car offers a different story: young people taking action, building an enterprise and asking their town to invest in their potential.
Local media helps make that work visible. When residents hear the people behind a project explain it in their own words, they can understand who will benefit, how the money will be used and why their support matters. The Bolton FM appearance also reflects the collaborative spirit behind the campaign. Partners, businesses, residents and supporters can all help turn a youth-led idea into a sustainable local enterprise.
Why practical work experience matters
Getting a first opportunity can be difficult when every vacancy seems to ask for previous experience. Young people who have spent time outside education or employment can face an even steeper climb. A gap on a CV may hide talent, determination and potential, but without a chance to demonstrate those qualities, progress can stall.
We Shine Any Car helps break that cycle by creating a supportive environment in which young people can gain genuine experience. The work is visible, useful and connected to real customers. Participants can point to responsibilities they have handled, standards they have met and skills they have developed.
The benefits can include:
- Experience of working with customers and colleagues
- Improved communication and teamwork
- Greater confidence in a professional setting
- Practical knowledge of car cleaning and equipment
- Understanding of safety, preparation and quality control
- Exposure to enterprise, budgeting and business thinking
- Mentoring and encouragement from trusted adults
- Evidence of reliability and achievement for future applications
Completing a shift, receiving positive feedback or earning money through honest work can create momentum towards a qualification, apprenticeship, job or business idea. It also allows employers and the wider community to see a young person’s ability, effort and progress.
The Pay It Forward campaign
Not everyone will be able to attend a car wash event in person, but everyone can still play a part. The Buy Me a Car Wash – Pay It Forward campaign allows supporters to donate the cost of a car clean or choose a higher level of support.
The current donation examples show how contributions can be translated into practical help:
- £10 can fund one paid car wash for a young person.
- £20 can support a car wash and a mentoring session.
- £50 can provide a day of enterprise work and wraparound support.
- £100 or more can help the team buy equipment, expand the project and create more opportunities.
Paying it forward is a simple way to create value even when your own car is not being cleaned. A donation can give a young person time on the job, access to guidance and the knowledge that somebody in their community believes in them.
Businesses can sponsor several car washes, fund enterprise activity, provide equipment or encourage employees and customers to support the appeal. Employers can also offer workplace visits, mentoring, placements or routes into employment.
Help We Shine Any Car raise £5,000
The campaign aims to raise £5,000 to strengthen the initiative and increase the number of opportunities available to young people.
Funds raised are intended to help provide:
- Car cleaning tools and supplies
- Personal protective equipment and uniforms
- Enterprise, employability and life skills workshops
- Paid work experience for participating young people
- A mobile car cleaning unit for community outreach events
- Support into sustainable careers or self-employment
Together, these elements can turn a one-day activity into a pathway. Equipment makes the work possible; training improves standards; mentoring helps participants manage challenges; and paid experience shows that their contribution has value. A mobile service could take the enterprise into workplaces, community venues and events, helping the team reach more customers and grow sustainably.
Cleaner cars, brighter futures
The strength of We Shine Any Car lies in its clarity. Customers receive a useful service. Young people receive experience, income, guidance and a chance to progress. Bolton benefits from a community enterprise that encourages participation and local pride.
The car wash is the starting point, but the bigger product is opportunity.
For one participant, the experience may provide the confidence to speak in an interview. For another, it may reveal a talent for customer service or team leadership. Someone else may discover an interest in vehicle care, logistics or running a business. Progress will look different for every young person, which is why flexible, practical projects can be so effective.
Support from Bolton Wanderers in the Community helps the campaign reach more people and connects it with a strong local identity. The Wanderers badge carries history, loyalty and belonging. When that platform is used to back young people, it can encourage supporters, families and businesses to take notice and get involved.
This is community action in a form people can see: young people working, partners standing beside them and local residents choosing to help.
How Bolton businesses can support the campaign
Businesses across Bolton can make an especially important contribution. Financial support is valuable, but partnership can take many forms.
A business could:
- Sponsor car washes for employees, customers or community members
- Book the team for a workplace car cleaning event
- Donate professional equipment, uniforms or supplies
- Offer mentoring, mock interviews or workplace visits
- Provide paid work experience or apprenticeship opportunities
- Share the campaign through company newsletters and social media
- Introduce the team to other local employers and supporters
For employers, this is a chance to support the future local workforce. Even a conversation, site visit or introduction can help someone understand the careers available to them. Business backing can help a young person gain a first reference, build a routine or recognise that they have something valuable to offer.
How you can help today
There are four straightforward ways to support We Shine Any Car:
1. Pay it forward
Donate the cost of a car wash, a mentoring session or a day of enterprise support. Every contribution moves the campaign closer to its £5,000 target.
2. Attend a car wash event
Bring your vehicle along, meet the young people and see the enterprise in action. You will leave with a cleaner car and the knowledge that your purchase supported real work experience.
3. Share the campaign
Post the fundraising link on social media, include it in a workplace newsletter or send it directly to someone who cares about youth opportunity in Bolton. A share can reach a future customer, donor, mentor or employer.
4. Become a business supporter
Offer sponsorship, equipment, expertise or an employment opportunity. Practical local partnerships can help We Shine Any Car grow beyond a single event and create lasting routes into work.
Back Bolton’s young people and help them shine
Bolton has always been strongest when people rally around their own. We Shine Any Car gives residents, supporters and businesses a clear way to do exactly that.
With the support of Bolton Wanderers in the Community, Genuine Futures, The Scrappers and the wider town, young people can gain the experience and encouragement they need to move forward. A donation will not solve every challenge on its own, but it can pay for a real opportunity: a shift, a mentoring conversation, the right equipment or a day in which a young person discovers what they are capable of.
That is why this campaign deserves the town’s backing.
Pay it forward today and help turn cleaner cars into brighter futures for Bolton’s young people.
