From Low Confidence to Work, Independence and Looking Ahead
This is what progress looks like.
When Jason Watkinson first joined our Boss Your Future Salford programme, he was struggling with his confidence and trying to work out what came next.
Today, the difference is remarkable.
Jason has completed work experience, passed his driving test, moved into self-employed work as an Evri delivery driver and is now thinking seriously about his longer-term career.
His confidence is through the roof.
But Jason’s journey didn’t happen overnight.
It happened one step, one opportunity and one relationship at a time.
Boss Your Future Salford
Boss Your Future Salford, funded by Salford City Council, was designed to reconnect with young people who had become disengaged from education, employment or training.
We did not start by asking what was wrong with them.
We started by asking:
What are you good at?
What interests you?
What is getting in your way?
And what opportunity could help you take the next step?
For Jason, one of the biggest barriers was confidence.
So rather than simply talking about employment, we helped him experience the world of work.
Turning Support Into Real Experience
Through Boss Your Future and our partnership approach, Jason was supported into work experience with Recycle IT.
That practical opportunity mattered.
Work experience gave Jason the chance to get out there, work alongside other people, experience responsibility and start demonstrating what he could do.
This is a fundamental part of the Genuine Futures approach.
Young people cannot build confidence solely by being told to be more confident.
They need opportunities to do something, achieve something and recognise their own ability.
For Jason, that experience became another step forward.
Passing His Driving Test
Then came another major milestone.
Jason passed his driving test. 
For many young people, a driving licence can be transformational.
It can increase independence, widen the geographical area in which they can look for employment and open up jobs that simply were not accessible before.
For Jason, it also opened the door to his next employment opportunity.
The young man who had initially struggled with confidence was beginning to believe in himself.
His confidence was growing — and so were his options.
From Work Experience to Earning
Jason went on to become a self-employed delivery driver with Evri.
He is now earning, developing experience and taking responsibility for his own working life.
He has also been working towards securing a permanent delivery round.
Look at that progression:
Low confidence → Boss Your Future → Work experience → Passed his driving test → Self-employed delivery work → Looking towards his next career opportunity.
That is what a pathway looks like.
Now Jason Is Looking Further Ahead
What impressed us most when Jason recently got back in touch was not simply that he was working.
It was the confidence, maturity and ambition in his message.
Jason is already looking beyond where he is today.
He is interested in progressing towards more stable PAYE employment, including exploring potential opportunities with Royal Mail.
The young person who once struggled to see his next step is now thinking about his career.
His confidence is through the roof.
He is earning.
He is driving.
He is planning.
And, importantly, he believes there is something more ahead of him.
A Programme Can Finish. The Relationship Doesn’t Have To.
Jason’s journey reinforces something we believe strongly at Genuine Futures:
Support should not disappear because a funded programme has finished.
Young people’s lives do not operate according to funding cycles.
An opportunity might emerge three months later.
A job might not work out.
Someone might pass their driving test and suddenly have access to opportunities that were previously impossible.
They might simply need somebody they trust to make an introduction.
That is why we keep the door open.
Our aim is not to create dependency.
It is to build enough confidence, experience, relationships and opportunity for young people to keep progressing independently.
This Is What Boss Your Future Is About
Boss Your Future is not simply an employability course.
It creates practical pathways into:
- employment;
- work experience;
- enterprise and self-employment;
- education and training;
- practical and transferable skills;
- creative opportunities;
- community participation; and
- longer-term progression.
Jason’s journey demonstrates how those different pieces can connect.
The work experience mattered.
Passing his driving test mattered.
Getting his first delivery work mattered.
The trusted relationships mattered.
And every step increased what became possible next.
Boss Your Future Is Now Recruiting in Bolton
We are now looking for the next group of young people ready to take their first step.
Boss Your Future Bolton V3 starts in October 2026 and recruitment is now open.
We are looking for young people aged 15–24 who may be NEET, disengaged from education or employment, struggling with confidence, unsure about their future or simply in need of a different approach.
You do not need to know exactly what career you want.
You do not need a perfect CV.
And you do not need to have everything figured out.
That is where we start.
Through Boss Your Future, young people can experience real opportunities, meet employers, explore enterprise, develop practical skills and discover pathways they may never have considered before.
