Amazon UK Boss John Boumphrey Is Right — Young People Are Not the Problem

Posted on: 26th May 2026 | 2 min

A powerful national conversation is finally beginning.

In a recent BBC interview, Amazon UK Country Manager John Boumphrey spoke openly about the urgent need for meaningful work experience and early opportunities for young people.

And one message stood out above everything else:

Young people are not the problem.
The system is failing them.

At Genuine Futures, this is something we have been saying for years.

We work directly with young people who have been excluded, overlooked, labelled, or pushed aside by systems that were supposed to support them. Many have lost confidence in education, employment, and even in themselves.

But when they are given real opportunity, real responsibility, and real belief — everything changes.

Why This Conversation Matters

Too many young people leave school without:

  • Real-world experience
  • Confidence
  • Workplace exposure
  • Mentorship
  • Direction
  • Hope for the future

Then society asks why they struggle to engage with employment.

The reality is simple:
You cannot expect young people to believe in a future they have never been allowed to experience.

That is why work experience, enterprise, mentoring, and community-led opportunities matter more than ever.

We See the Potential Every Day

Through the Boss Your Future programme and our youth-led enterprises including We Shine Any Car and Clean Futures, we see first-hand what happens when young people are trusted and empowered.

Young people who once struggled to communicate are now:

  • Leading community events
  • Speaking with businesses
  • Supporting local residents
  • Building enterprise skills
  • Inspiring other young people
  • Becoming leaders in their own communities

This is why early intervention matters.

Not after crisis.
Not after exclusion.
Not after involvement with the justice system.

Before.

Businesses Must Be Part of the Solution

John Boumphrey’s comments are important because they show that major employers are recognising the problem too.

This cannot sit solely with schools.

We need businesses, employers, community organisations, local authorities, and grassroots organisations to work together to create genuine pathways into opportunity.

Because one placement…
One mentor…
One opportunity…
Can completely change a young person’s life.

We’re sharing the BBC interview clip alongside our response because this conversation needs to reach more people.

Young people do not need more labels.
They need opportunity.
They need guidance.
They need belief.
And they need adults willing to stand together and act.

Join the Movement

At Genuine Futures, we believe community power, enterprise, and early intervention can restore young futures.

If your business, organisation, school, or community group wants to support meaningful opportunities for young people, we would love to connect.
