From Washing Cars at 15 to Changing Lives: Bradley Phelan, Sam Smith and the Vision Behind We Shine Any Car
Posted on:
Sometimes the biggest life changes start with the simplest opportunities.
For Bradley Phelan, that opportunity came at just 15 years old, when he knocked on the door of one of Sam Smith’s car wash sites in Blackpool.
At the time, Sam had built a reputation across the town. People locally knew him as the “Car Wash King.” His car wash sites were always busy, packed with customers and buzzing with young people learning the ropes.
But what really set Sam apart wasn’t just the success of the business. It was his belief in giving people a chance.
Sam had a simple approach: if someone knocked on the door looking for work, he would try to give them an opportunity — especially young people.
“Over the years we had so many young people come through the gates looking for a chance,” Sam says. “If they were willing to graft, we’d always try to find them a place.”
For many young people, that opportunity changed their lives. Bradley was one of them.
When School Doesn’t Work for Everyone
Like many teenagers, Bradley didn’t particularly thrive in school.
Traditional classroom learning wasn’t where he found his strengths, and like many young people today, he was still trying to work out what direction his life might take.
“I didn’t really do particularly well at school,” Bradley says.
“I just hadn’t found what I was good at yet.”
Everything changed when he started working at the car wash.
“Sam gave me my first opportunity of a job and I haven’t looked back since,” Bradley says.
“I was shy and low in confidence when I started, but once I got into working with the team, things began to change.”
Sam still remembers Bradley’s first day.
“I still remember the very day Bradley came in,” Sam says.
“He was shy and low in confidence, but he quickly learned and became a key member of the team. They were all young grafters back then and that’s what made the place special.”
A Car Wash That Was Packed Every Day
Back then, Sam’s car wash sites were thriving.
Cars would queue up daily, customers returned week after week, and the young team working there took pride in delivering a great service.
“It was packed all the time,” Bradley remembers.
“Customers came back week in, week out because they knew they were getting a proper job done.”
For the young people working there, it was more than just a job.
It was a place to grow.
“We had the chance to learn and earn money at the same time,” Bradley says.
“The tips we used to get from customers were great — we’d share them out between the lads. We worked hard, but we also had great fun doing it.”
More importantly, it was where many young people developed their first real work ethic.
“You had to graft,” Bradley says.
“You had to turn up on time, deal with customers and work as a team. Those lessons stay with you for life.”
From Car Washer to Business Owner
Those early experiences shaped Bradley’s future.
The discipline, confidence and practical skills he developed through car cleaning and valeting helped him build the mindset needed to eventually start his own business.
Today Bradley runs Phelan Joinery, a successful joinery company built on the same values he first learned washing cars.
Looking back, Bradley believes that first opportunity changed the course of his life.
“Working with Sam in Blackpool taught me everything I know,” he says.
“He showed us how to work properly, how to respect customers and how to take pride in what we were doing.”
And Bradley wasn’t the only one.
“A lot of the lads who worked there went on to bigger things,” Bradley says.
“That car wash gave people a start.”
The Challenge Facing Young People Today
Today across the UK, thousands of young people are classed as NEET — Not in Education, Employment or Training.
Many of these young people have incredible potential, but they simply haven’t been given the right opportunity yet.
Not every young person thrives in a classroom environment.
Some young people learn best by doing, building confidence through practical work and seeing the results of their effort.
This is where enterprise-led programmes can make a powerful difference.
The Birth of We Shine Any Car
Today Bradley is working alongside Sam Smith and Mike Alleyne, co-directors of Genuine Futures C.I.C., to help young people through the We Shine Any Car youth-led enterprise.
Operating from The Scrappers in Bolton, the programme provides hands-on experience in professional car cleaning and valeting, while also helping young people develop essential life skills.
Young people involved in the programme learn:
• Professional vehicle cleaning and detailing
• Customer service and teamwork
• Work ethic and responsibility
• Communication and confidence
• Real work experience
For many participants, this is their first experience of meaningful work.
Introducing the We Shine Any Car Academy
Alongside the enterprise itself, the team is also developing the We Shine Any Car Academy.
The academy is designed to provide structured learning alongside practical experience, helping young people build skills that can lead to employment, self-employment or further training.
The academy focuses on three key areas:
Professional Vehicle Cleaning and Valeting
Young people learn industry-standard car cleaning and detailing techniques.
Light Vehicle Maintenance
Participants gain exposure to basic vehicle maintenance skills and workshop environments.
Enterprise and Employability Skills
Young people learn about teamwork, customer service, communication, and the basics of running a business.
The aim is simple: give young people practical pathways into work and enterprise.
A Proven Concept That Works
The idea behind We Shine Any Car and the We Shine Any Car Academy is based on something that has already proven successful.
Sam has seen first-hand how giving young people an opportunity can transform lives.
Bradley’s story is living proof.
“Bradley’s journey shows exactly what can happen when someone is given a chance,” Sam says.
“He started washing cars as a young lad and now he’s a successful business owner helping the next generation.”
Mike Alleyne, Co-Director of Genuine Futures, believes enterprise-led learning unlocks potential that traditional systems often miss.
“When young people realise they are capable of achieving something, their confidence grows incredibly quickly,” Mike says.
“That’s when real change happens.”
A Vision to Expand
While We Shine Any Car currently operates from The Scrappers in Bolton, the ambition is far greater.
The team plans to expand the model into other communities, helping many more young people gain opportunities through enterprise.
Bradley is passionate about being part of that journey.
“I know what it feels like to be that young person who just needs a chance,” he says.
“If we can grow this programme and help more young people get started the way I did, that would be something really special.”
A Call for Support
The team at Genuine Futures believes this proven concept could help transform many more lives with the right support.
They are inviting:
• Local authorities
• Funders and grant providers
• Businesses committed to social value
• Community organisations
to come and see the programme in action.
“This is a proven concept,” Sam says.
“We’ve seen it work before and we’re seeing it work again now. But with the right support, we could help many more young people.”
Businesses can also get involved by supporting the academy, providing opportunities, or working alongside the programme.
Cleaning Cars. Changing Lives.
At first glance, We Shine Any Car might look like a car cleaning service.
But in reality, it is something much bigger.
It’s about confidence.
It’s about opportunity.
And it’s about helping young people discover what they are capable of achieving.
For Bradley, the message is simple.
“I started washing cars when I was 15,” he says.
“Now I run my own business. If that can happen for me, it can happen for other young people too.”
Through the combined efforts of Bradley Phelan, Sam Smith, Mike Alleyne and the Genuine Futures team, a new generation of young people is being given the opportunity to shine.
And with the continued growth of We Shine Any Car and the We Shine Any Car Academy, many more young people could soon have the chance to build a brighter future.
