“Genuine Futures Has Changed Alex’s Life” — What Family Practitioners Are Saying About Our Impact

Posted on: 18th November 2025 | 3 min

At Genuine Futures, we can talk about our programmes, our approach, and our commitment to young people — but nothing is more powerful than what the professionals supporting them say about the difference our work is making.

We recently received a heartfelt testimonial from Colin Cooper, Family Practitioner at Salford Children’s Services, about a young person who joined us earlier this year through the Boss Your Future Salford programme, delivered in partnership with Entrepreneurs Unlocked. With permission to share, here is Alex’s story — told from Colin’s perspective.

A Young Person at Risk of Slipping Through the Cracks

Before Alex joined us, he was struggling with mainstream school attendance. His parents, school, and Children’s Services were concerned that he was at risk of not sitting his exams and becoming further disengaged.

During a Young Person Planning workshop, the Child Protection Coordinator recommended a referral to Genuine Futures — and that decision became a turning point.

A Professional’s View of Alex’s Transformation

Once Alex joined the Boss Your Future Salford cohort, everything began to change.

Colin shared:

“Since starting with your service Alex has developed a much stronger, more positive outlook about his future.
He feels part of something positive and welcome.”

From day one, Alex felt accepted. He connected with mentors, speakers, and other young people. He began forming friendships and rediscovering his confidence — not just attending, but engaging, contributing, and building momentum.

Positive Experiences That Build Confidence and Aspiration

Through our Young Futures Hub and youth-led enterprise activities, Alex took part in experiences that helped rebuild his sense of purpose, including:

  • The pop-up car wash initiative
  • Adventure One outdoor development
  • Weekly Young Futures Hub workshops and mentoring

Colin wrote:

“Your service has given Alex memories such as the popup car wash and Adventure One. He really enjoys attending your sessions and has made many friendships.”

These weren’t just activities. They were catalysts for identity, confidence, and aspiration.

Real Outcomes: From Disengagement to College

As Alex grew in confidence, he began planning clear next steps for his future:

“As a result of engaging with you, Alex has now registered with 2 local colleges…”

We are delighted to share the most recent update Alex has now started full time college.

A huge achievement, and a testament to his determination, the support around him, and the belief placed in him by everyone involved.

What Our Partners Are Saying

Mike Alleyne, Co-Director at Genuine Futures, reflected on Alex’s journey:

“Young people thrive when someone believes in them. Alex walked in unsure, but he walked out with confidence, community, and a plan. That’s what this work is all about.”

And David Morgan, Founder of Entrepreneurs Unlocked, shared:

“Alex’s progress shows what happens when partnership, lived experience, and opportunity come together. He didn’t just attend a programme — he found a pathway.”

Their reflections highlight the power of collaborative, community-driven support.

“Thank You for Being Part of the Team Around Alex.”

Colin’s closing message says it best:

“Once again thank you for being part of the team around Alex.”
