HMP Stafford: Real Conversations That Drive Change
Posted on:
Inside HMP Stafford, something different happened.
Not a lecture.
Not a tick-box session.
A real conversation.
Delivered by Sam Smith, Founder of Genuine Futures and ambassador with Entrepreneurs Unlocked, the session focused on mindset, ownership, and building a future through self-employment.
From Care to Custody – A Story That Connects
This wasn’t theory.
This was lived experience.
At 13, Sam was remanded into the care of the authorities, sent to a secure unit, and assessed as a danger.
By 15, he was in custody.
Seven days after being released, he was back inside.
A cycle many in the room understood.
Care.
Custody.
Instability.
No direction.
No real way out.
That’s why the message connected—because it was real.
“No One Is Coming” – The Moment That Changes Everything
One line landed harder than anything else:
“No one is coming.”
Not a negative message.
A powerful one.
Because it shifts everything from waiting…
to taking control.
For Sam, that moment was the turning point.
The moment he stopped waiting for change—
and started building it.
Starting From Nothing – And Building Something
There was no big opportunity waiting.
No funding.
No qualifications.
No support network.
Just a bucket and a sponge.
Knocking doors.
Facing rejection.
Getting that first yes.
That first bit of legal money changed everything.
Because it wasn’t just money.
It was proof.
Self-Employment: A Real Pathway After Prison
For many leaving custody, the barriers are real:
- Criminal records
- Limited job opportunities
- Lack of trust
- Low confidence
But self-employment offers something different.
It offers:
- Control
- Independence
- A starting point
“You don’t need £1,000.
You don’t need £10,000.
You need your first £20.”
That message resonated throughout the room.
What the Men at HMP Stafford Said
The feedback was honest and powerful:
- “I learnt you don’t need money to start a business.”
- “I am not my past.”
- “Keep knocking on doors and don’t give up.”
- “Throwing off the negative.”
- “The message of ‘nobody is coming’ was hard hitting.”
These aren’t just words.
They are moments where thinking begins to shift.
Redefining Success
When asked what success means, the answers were real:
- Having enough money to survive
- Living comfortably
- Passing on skills
- Running a small business
- Enjoying what they do
Not unrealistic expectations.
Not overnight success.
Just something stable. Something better.
The Potential Is Already There
The ideas were already in the room:
- Social media marketing
- Software development
- Groundwork
- Web design
- Digital marketing
- Mobile barbering
This isn’t a lack of talent.
It’s a lack of opportunity, structure, and belief.
Why Lived Experience Matters
Traditional sessions don’t always connect.
Lived experience does.
Because it removes the gap.
When someone stands in front of that room and says:
“I’ve been where you are—and I found a way out.”
People listen differently.
More Than a Session – A Shift in Direction
Not everyone changes.
But some do.
And for those individuals, one moment is enough.
One idea.
One shift in thinking.
One decision.
That’s what this work is about.
Not motivation.
Real change.
Final Message
Your past got you here… but it doesn’t have to take you back.
