Youth Voice in Action: Unlocking Young People’s Potential in Bolton
Posted on:
What happens when we stop defining a young person by what they struggle with and start discovering what they are good at?
Luis is showing us.
At Genuine Futures, we have watched Luis grow in confidence, find his voice and develop into a fantastic natural presenter.
His journey reminds us of something that should be at the heart of how we support young people: potential does not disappear because somebody learns, communicates or experiences the world differently.
Sometimes that potential simply needs the right environment, trusted relationships and a genuine opportunity to emerge.
Discovering a Natural Presenter
As part of our youth voice and media work, Luis has been exploring the history and heritage of Bolton.
In one of our latest videos, he visits Falcon Mill and takes viewers inside an important part of Bolton’s industrial past.
This isn’t simply a young person appearing in a video.
Luis is researching, communicating, asking questions, presenting and connecting with his community.
He is developing skills that can transfer into media, heritage, tourism, communications, employment and many other areas.
Most importantly, he is discovering what he can do.

Start With Strengths, Not Labels
Young people who are autistic, have SEND, are NEET, care experienced, excluded from education or facing other barriers can too often find conversations dominated by what they cannot do.
We want to change that conversation.
A diagnosis or label can be important in understanding the support somebody needs, but it should never become the limit placed on their ambition.
We should also be asking:
What interests them?
What are they naturally good at?
What environment helps them thrive?
What opportunity could unlock something we haven’t seen yet?
For Luis, presenting and local history have helped reveal strengths that deserve to be developed.
Another young person’s strength might be mechanics, music, sport, construction, enterprise, digital media, cooking or working with people.
We won’t discover those abilities if young people never get the opportunity to try.
Youth Voice Has to Mean More Than Consultation
At Genuine Futures, youth voice isn’t about inviting young people into a room once a year and asking them what they think.
Young people need meaningful roles.
They need platforms.
They need responsibility.
They need opportunities to influence decisions and show their abilities in the real world.
Through our work, young people are becoming presenters, ambassadors, entrepreneurs, volunteers, workers and community contributors.
That changes the narrative.
Instead of asking young people to prove they are ready for opportunity, we should be creating environments where they can become ready through experience.
Prevention Through Opportunity
There is also a bigger reason why this matters.
When young people become disconnected from education, employment and their communities, waiting until they reach crisis makes rebuilding their confidence and trust much harder.
Prevention needs to happen earlier.
That means schools, colleges, local authorities, employers, voluntary organisations, families and communities working together to identify young people’s strengths and connect them with meaningful opportunities.
A camera can become more than a camera.
A car wash can become more than washing cars.
A podcast can become more than a conversation.
A visit to a historic building can become more than a day out.
Each can become a doorway into confidence, skills, relationships, aspiration and employment.
That is why Genuine Futures creates practical opportunities through youth-led enterprise, employability, media, community activity and trusted relationships.
Bolton Has Talent. We Need to Unlock It.
Luis is one young person.
There are many more across Bolton whose abilities may currently be hidden behind low confidence, isolation, unemployment, difficulties within education or assumptions about what they can achieve.
Imagine what could happen if we found those strengths earlier.
Imagine if businesses opened their doors to young people who need a first opportunity.
Imagine if schools and services could refer young people before disengagement becomes crisis.
Imagine if communities became places where young people felt needed rather than unwanted.
That is the opportunity in front of us.
Work With Genuine Futures
We want to hear from schools, colleges, employers, community organisations, housing providers and services working with young people across Bolton and Greater Manchester.
If you know a young person who needs an opportunity, refer early.
If you’re an employer, offer an experience, workplace visit, mentoring opportunity or route into employment.
If you’re a community organisation, let’s collaborate rather than duplicate.
And if you’re a young person who hasn’t discovered your next step yet, we’d like to hear from you too.
Because sometimes unlocking a future starts with one person noticing a strength nobody else has seen.
