That is what Genuine Futures CIC is building through We Shine Any Car.
We are developing We Shine Any Car with the ambition of becoming the UK’s first youth-led vehicle cleaning enterprise — connecting businesses that need professional vehicle cleaning with young people who need genuine opportunities to demonstrate what they can do.
And we’re already seeing the model working.
On the Road with Squosh IT
Luis and Cameron recently started their week out in the business community, cleaning and valeting vehicles for Squosh IT.
But this wasn’t simulated work experience.
There was a real customer, real vehicles, real expectations and a professional standard to meet.
Luis then turned the tables and interviewed Eric McBean, Founder of Squosh IT, asking him a simple question:
“Why did you choose us to clean your vans today?”
Eric explained that his decision wasn’t based solely on getting the vehicles cleaned.
He valued Genuine Futures as a local social enterprise and highlighted the wider opportunity for young people to develop practical skills alongside education, mindset and the attitude needed to get work done.
That is exactly the relationship we want to build with more businesses.
“Our Squosh IT Van Is Sparkling Clean”
Creating social value doesn’t mean compromising on service.
Luis asked Eric whether he was satisfied with the work.
His response was clear:
“Our Squosh IT van is sparkling clean… you guys have done an excellent job of it today.”
For a waste management business, maintaining clean, presentable vehicles still matters. Every vehicle on the road represents the company behind it.
Luis then asked another important question:
“Would you recommend us to other businesses?”
Eric said he would.
He also pointed out that other businesses on the estate could already see the young people working and the standard they were delivering.
That visibility matters.
One fleet-cleaning contract can create experience. One satisfied customer can create another customer. And another customer can create another opportunity for a young person.
More Than Fleet Cleaning
At first glance, We Shine Any Car is about cleaning cars and vans.
Look closer and something much bigger is happening.
Young people can develop:
- customer service and communication
- teamwork and workplace behaviours
- vehicle cleaning and valeting skills
- health and safety awareness
- punctuality and responsibility
- quality control
- confidence and resilience
- sales and marketing experience
- understanding of pricing and costs
- enterprise and leadership skills.
This is learning through real work.
A young person doesn’t have to imagine what employment feels like. They experience the expectations, relationships and responsibilities that come with delivering for a real customer.
Fleet Cleaning That Creates Social Value
Businesses across Bolton and Greater Manchester already spend money maintaining their cars, vans and commercial fleets.
Our proposition is straightforward:
Your vehicles need cleaning anyway. Why not make that spend create opportunity too?
Rather than social value existing separately from normal business activity, we want to embed it into everyday procurement.
A business can receive a service it genuinely needs while helping create opportunities for young people locally.
That creates potential value for everyone involved.
The business receives a professional service and strengthens its local social impact.
Young people gain experience, skills, references, connections and progression opportunities.

That last point is important.
We don’t want We Shine Any Car to depend entirely on grants.
We want to build a genuine trading enterprise where commercial contracts help fund and create the next opportunity.
From Business Fleets to School Enterprise
We also believe the model has significant potential within education.
Not every young person learns best sitting in a classroom.
For some pupils, practical activity can provide the connection between education and the world beyond the school gates.
That’s why we’re developing the potential for We Shine Any Car school enterprise and vocational pathways.
Imagine young people learning about business by helping operate a real enterprise.
They could experience vehicle preparation and valeting alongside customer service, maths, English, marketing, budgeting, teamwork, health and safety and entrepreneurship.
Instead of simply being told why these skills matter, young people get to use them.
A Different Pathway for Young People at Risk of Becoming NEET
This could be particularly valuable for schools, alternative provision and organisations supporting young people who are disengaging from mainstream education or at risk of becoming NEET.
T-levels, apprenticeships, college and university are important pathways.
But we also need to ask:
What happens to the young person who isn’t ready to access those opportunities yet?
Waiting until somebody has been disconnected from education and employment for months or years is expensive for the individual, their family, public services and the wider community.
Genuine Futures believes in prevention before crisis.
Practical enterprise can become part of that preventative pathway.
A young person who struggles to engage with a conventional lesson may respond differently when told:
“We’ve got a customer. We’ve got a job to complete. You’re part of the team.”
That creates purpose.
It creates responsibility.
And, importantly, it creates belonging.
Building a Youth-Led Enterprise
Our ambition isn’t simply for young people to wash vehicles.
We want young people to increasingly help lead the enterprise.
That means developing opportunities across:

Luis interviewing Eric is a small but important example.
He wasn’t hidden behind the scenes.
He was representing the enterprise, speaking directly with a customer, asking for feedback and helping tell the story.
That is youth leadership in practice.

Creating pathways where young people can progress from participation into responsibility, paid employment, further education, apprenticeships or potentially their own enterprise.
The long-term opportunity is to create a model that is both commercially viable and socially valuable.
