Genuine Futures and H.M. Pasties Launch an Exciting Enterprise Opportunity for Young People

At Genuine Futures, we believe that the best learning happens through real experiences.

That’s why we’re delighted to be working alongside H.M. Pasties to give young people an opportunity that goes far beyond the classroom.

Together, we’re inviting young people to take part in an exciting enterprise project where they will design their own pie, develop practical business skills and see their creation sold at the Bolton Food & Drink Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

This isn’t a mock business exercise.

It’s a genuine opportunity to create, market and sell a real product.

More Than Just Making a Pie

This project has been designed to help young people build confidence, develop employability skills and experience what it’s like to work within a successful social enterprise.

Participants will attend three creative sessions where they’ll work with the H.M. Pasties team to develop their ideas before selecting a pie to take to market.

The successful pie will then be sold to thousands of visitors attending one of Bolton’s biggest annual events.

Gain Skills That Employers Value

Alongside the practical experience, young people will also have access to recognised online learning, including:

  • Food Hygiene
  • Allergen Awareness
  • Health and Safety
  • Plus more than 30 additional employability and workplace certificates.

These qualifications help strengthen CVs while building confidence and preparing young people for employment.

Real Work Experience

Participants will also volunteer for at least one morning or afternoon during the Bolton Food & Drink Festival, working alongside the H.M. Pasties team.

They’ll experience:

  • Customer service
  • Retail
  • Teamwork
  • Food production
  • Sales
  • Enterprise
  • Communication
  • Problem solving

These are transferable skills that employers across every sector are looking for.

A Partnership Built on Purpose

H.M. Pasties is more than an award-winning bakery.

Founded by Lee Wakeham, the business combines high-quality handmade products with a commitment to creating employment opportunities, training and second chances for people who have experienced barriers to work. Its mission is built around using business as a force for positive social change through meaningful employment and skills development.

That purpose aligns closely with Genuine Futures’ mission of Bridging the Gap to Opportunity by helping young people develop confidence, skills and pathways into employment, enterprise and education.

Together, this partnership demonstrates how businesses and social enterprises can work together to create genuine opportunities for the next generation.

Why This Matters

At Genuine Futures, we know that many young people learn best by doing.

Projects like this combine creativity, enterprise, accredited learning and real work experience to help young people discover their potential.

It’s another example of how prevention, collaboration and opportunity can change futures—one conversation, one opportunity and, in this case, one pie at a time.
