Young People Caught Up in a Cycle of Drugs and Crime

Posted on: 23rd May 2024 | 2 min

To All Parents and Carers, Be Vigilant!

Every week, young people criss-cross the UK on buses and trains, ferrying drugs as part of county lines operations.

The fight against gangs exploiting children to deal drugs is likely to last a generation. County lines is a term used to describe criminal gangs who move illegal drugs from big cities to smaller towns and sell them using dedicated mobile phone lines.

The latest figures suggest there are 600 potential county lines, which is a reduction due to more accurate recording methods and improved police activity. The gangs often recruit vulnerable children to carry and deal Class A substances, to reduce their own risk of arrest.

Understanding County Lines in the UK

County lines exploitation is a significant issue in the UK, where criminal gangs from urban areas expand their drug operations into smaller towns. According to the National Crime Agency, the term “county lines” refers to the phone numbers used by gangs to direct drug deals and coordinate the movement of drugs and money. These gangs often target vulnerable children and young people, exploiting them to transport and sell drugs across the country.

The Impact on Young Lives

The Children’s Society has reported that many young people coerced into county lines activity are subject to extreme violence, threats, and sexual exploitation. Once involved, these young individuals find it incredibly difficult to escape the cycle of crime, which can have devastating long-term effects on their lives and futures.

Taking Action

Efforts to combat county lines involve a multi-agency approach, including youth justice services, social services, and community organisations like Genuine Futures CIC. By raising awareness, providing education, and offering support to at-risk youth, we can work towards eradicating this issue and protecting our young people from exploitation.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

By joining forces and staying vigilant, parents, carers, and community members can help protect young people from the dangers of county lines exploitation. Let’s work together to create a safer, more supportive environment for all our children and young people.
